Once they did reach their destination on the west side of the US, the work was far from over. A house would need to be built for shelter, and as many arrived in the late summer or fall, that meant that the house would need to be built before the cold comes. Women quickly learned to wield an ax to help right along with their husbands.Pioneer women also had to deal with animals for example: rodents, marauding animals, including bear and coyotes, and lions. The women still did the same things they did back home, they washed clothes, kept food on the table, kept the wagon clean, watched over the children and keeping the family healthy.
